cop city/chill pillars

GO BUY THIS RECORD, SERIOUSLY.

One of the best bands to come out of Florida in recent (and probably all) history.

Grab it from FLORIDA'S DYING.

luau

Okay. A Russian surf rock duo with a female guitarist who shreds the shit out of her guitar. Get on it.

MUSIC /// SANDY NELSON - CASBAH

SANDY NELSON is one of my all time favorites, right up there with JOE MEEK. Recorded in his garage, playing some of the baddest beats of all times with one arm and created some really warped sounds in his day.

Luckily, you can find a lot of his records hanging out at flea markets and thrift stores. Snag 'em.

MUSIC /// JIMMY GORDON - BUZZZZZZ

I have a bunch of "Halloween" themed music on the way. Getting back into regular posting.

Hang in there, baby!

MUSIC /// THE TRASHWOMEN - BATTERIES

I apologize for this video being just the album cover, but THIS SONG IS SO GOOD!

MUSIC /// THE FRANTICS - WEREWOLF

THE FRANTICS were from the Pacific Northwest and originally formed in high school, calling themselves THE FOUR FRANTICS. Two members later went on to form the band MOBY GRAPE.

As far as I can tell, the band didn't produce much music, but "WEREWOLF" alone is enough to cement them as amazing in my mind.

Howling, creepy spoken word, and fucking rock n' roll.

MUSIC /// THE CHANCELLORS - SCREAM

I don't really know anything about THE CHANCELLORS other than this, "SCREAM" is one raw piece of instrumental rock n' roll.

Wet American surf rock with a psychotic, off kilter edge.

"SCREAM" is now available on the amazing BACK FROM THE GRAVE comps.

MUSIC /// THE EAGLES - STALACTITE

First off, this is not the Eagles you're probably thinking of. While I'm one of the rare music bloggers who actually does like /those/ Eagles, these guys are way better.

An obscure 60's Swedish band originally called "LES AILGONS" (the baby eagles), THE EAGLES released this single of JOE MEEK-esque bizarreness, which is still light years beyond anything rock bands are currently doing.

MUSIC /// SPEAK AND THE SPELLS

I listened to every song on this band's Myspace at 2am this morning.

It's that good.

Trashy, fervent surf rock n' roll, soaking wet with spring reverb and monster party madness.

SPEAK AND THE SPELLS.

Dig this shit.

MUSIC /// SPECTRALS

SPECTRALS makes non-chalant, yet immediate pop music with a 60's bounce.

These songs are recorded well with appropriate amounts of dreamy reverb thrown in to make you feel as though Gidget might pop around the corner and blow you a kiss.

Beach music without all of the annoying bullshit unnecessary fuzz that the past years have made so mandatory.

I recommend listening to "LEAVE ME BE" and checking into their CAPTURED TRACKS 7".

MUSIC /// Red Dons

Do you like THE WIPERS a whole lot?

Do you wish more bands had the same balls and vibe as said band?

Meet RED DONS.

A friend turned me onto these guys tonight and I'm floored at how good this band sounds. The guitars are sick. Dark, surfy, angular, heavy, and awesome.

Check them out for sure.

dr. vampire ///

If you're looking for some solid instrumental psychobilly creeper tunes, then London's DR. VAMPIRE is where you need to be looking.

Surfy organs, tremelo'd out guitars spinning all over the place, all with an eternal Halloween vibe.

Let this be a lesson to all of your dronetards out there that Goth music can be fun.

Head over to their Myspace and check it out!

cosmonauts ///

Having just heard COSMONAUTS for the first time, I think it's safe to say these guys are one of my new favorite bands.

Just go listen to their version of "OUR MAN FLINT".

These guys are totally fucking cool.

student teacher /// baby teardrop tattoo

Vancouver's own, STUDENT TEACHER posted a new song on their Myspace page yesterday called "BABY TEARDROP TATTOO" and it's got plenty of gothy surf soul.

I suggest you go check it out, along with their other tunes and if you live in Canada make an effort to catch these guys in May, since they have dates with MYELIN SHEATHES, INDIAN WARS, and BOX ELDERS coming up.

darksurfers & the yawns /// dreamland

New Jersey's DARKSURFERS & THE YAWNS are bring a dark wave into simple guitar based lo-fi pop. It's almost reminiscient of Beat Happening at times, with the deep baritone vocals, but more melodic than that band. Gothy, jangly pop. Shit is like a drug for me.

If you dig what you hear on their myskizz page, the band has an EP available for free download. Snag it.

fungi girls /// turquoise hotel

Texas' Fungi Girls posted this song up not too long ago and I've been a slacker about writing about it. The track is called "TURQUOISE HOTEL" and is more of a Dick Dale direction than the songs on SEAFARING PYRAMIDS.

If this new track is an indication of sounds to come, then Fungi Girls are gonna wreak havoc in 2010.

These kids remind me so much of my high school band.

Check the new jam out over at their myskizz page.

boogie nazis /// don't wake daddy

Despite having one of the worst band names in history, Tuscon's Boogie Nazis are damn cool.

Solid surf rock from some dudes who don't even have a beach to go to. Grab their DON'T TELL DADDY EP for free over at CLLCT.

the go team /// donna parker pop

If you're unfamiliar with The Go Team (not the weird ass funk 2000's ensemble) then you should download this. This is pre - Beat Happening K Records stuff. Calvin Johnson and Tobi Vale playing guitar + drums on this tape, which is waaay out of print. They did a series of singles and full length cassette, also. Super minimal, boombox surf rock instrumentals.

Life changing.

kill surrf ///

Kill Surrf is some dude from Scotland. He doesn't really give much info on his myskizz, which I like. The music is lo-f, simple, non-fuzzed, and mostly instrumental. I love it. Some of you hipster cock suckers could take a couple cues from dudes like this. If you like early Calvin Johnson projects like The Go Team or early Beat Happening, this is your jive.
