terrible feelings - tied up

TERRIBLE FEELINGS has released a new 7". These European cats make some pretty solid punk rock.

Wait for the guitar solo in the background on the title track. Greg Sage would be proud.

Check it out here.

Side note: If you're a band who is sending me music, don't be a dick and disable embedding on Soundcloud. What kind of stupid shit is that?

VIDEO /// PARTY PHOTOGRAPHERS - PEGGY SUE

PARTY PHOTOGRAPHERS is a band from Pennsylvania which I was turned onto by YVYNL (Mark is the man) and I'm falling in love with.

It's rock n' roll, punk, whatever you want to call it. It's good stuff.

Hit up their Myspace for info on getting a copy of their 7".

MUSIC /// CEREMONY - ROHNERT PARK

So, the year is winding down and I'll be doing some posts on my favorite releases of 2010, as opposed to some gigantic list.

Anyways, CEREMONY released their 3rd album ROHNERT PARK earlier this year through BRIDGE 9 and damn what a record.

Hardcore is being reinvented and it's most minimal and primitive ideology is being embraced by bands like CEREMONY, FUCKED UP, and the sadly now deceased ST. DAD, leaving us with music that doesn't sound any specific way, but is no less hard hitting and in your face.

ROHNERT PARK carries with it the swagger of early American proto punk and garage bands such as THE SONICS or THE MONKS, who were, in my book, more "hardcore" than any band ALTERNATIVE PRESS is pushing these days.

Anyways, enough ranting. This album is bound to be a classic and already is in my book. Snag it from BRIDGE 9 on white vinyl for $12.00.

Does it get any better than that?

MUSIC /// TERRIBLE FEELINGS

SWEDEN'S own TERRIBLE FEELINGS is making immediate, angsty punk rock and cutting out all of the bullshit.

Bands like THE WIPERS and MURDER CITY DEVILS are first brought to mind with the raw vocals, pounding rhythm section and snakey surf-esque guitar lines winding through.

The band has a tape coming out on SCOTCH TAPES this month and from the sounds of "BLANK HEADS" it's one that I'll be picking up.

There's no such thing as too much DEAD MOON.

MUSIC /// CATHOLIC SPRAY

CATHOLIC SPRAY is a fucked up, psycho trash band from PARIS, FRANCE.

The recordings sound like these guys were standing in the middle of the street with a thrift store tape recorder and decided to make an album.

It's that fucking good.

MUSIC /// SPEAK AND THE SPELLS

I listened to every song on this band's Myspace at 2am this morning.

It's that good.

Trashy, fervent surf rock n' roll, soaking wet with spring reverb and monster party madness.

SPEAK AND THE SPELLS.

Dig this shit.

MUSIC /// Shape Shifter

YARCH!!! This is my first post here on JR!

My name is Dan, what is yours? Do you like me, I like you?

SHAPE SHIFTER

On Don Giovani records. Not sure if they're around anymore but I really love their 7". Super tight songs with catchy riffs peppered throughout. Makes me want to jump off of my futon and thrash. What more do you want from a hardcore band?

You can listen to the 7" on their myspace page.

MUSIC /// Welcomin' Committee In Flames

The only conclusion I can currently reach about Zagreb, Croatia is that the music scene is FUCKING BALLIN' AS SHIT and you'll probably see me posting a lot of Croatian bands in the next few days because, well, there's a lot of them and people need to hear this stuff.

The first band that has really caught my eye/ears is WELCOMIN' COMMITTEE IN FLAMES.

WCIF, as they call themselves for short, is composed of a guitarist, a drummer, and a singer. The guitarist and drummer are both very involved in the Zagreb music scene while the lead singer is this crazy lady from Japan who shouts shit about her tits.

The band first caught my eye through a photo set on the kick ass Croatian based blog, TEENAGE LOBOTOMY.

In the photo set you see the band rolling all over the floor, trading the microphone, beating two drums to shit, and weirding the shit out of the audience. My first thought? FUCK YES.

The music itself is slippery give-no-fuck rock n' roll stripped to it's barest of bones.  I could see the band easily drawing comparison to American legends The Gories, to give you a better idea.

I would love to see these cats live. Anyone want to book a flight to Croatia?

MUSIC /// Red Dons

Do you like THE WIPERS a whole lot?

Do you wish more bands had the same balls and vibe as said band?

Meet RED DONS.

A friend turned me onto these guys tonight and I'm floored at how good this band sounds. The guitars are sick. Dark, surfy, angular, heavy, and awesome.

Check them out for sure.

MUSIC /// Thee Goochi Boiz

Got a kick ass package in the mail from THEE GOOCHI BOIZ today and GODDAMN!!!

The 11 song demo they dropped me is BADASS. These are great songs recorded in a classy, not shitty, lo-fi punk rock fashion.

If you trust me, and you better fucking trust me, you'll go check these dudes out NOW.

"Banana Split" is my fucking jam.

cum stain ///

Saw these guys for the first time last night and was blown away. The lead singer got completely bare ass naked and stayed that way for the entire set. This would have been funny/awesome for any band to do, but these guys actually had kick ass songs to back up the live show.

If you're a fan of New York Dolls, Nobunz, and songs about jacking off, this is your jam.

Listen to their BURGER RECORDS cassette for free on BANDCAMP!

the swamps ///

FUNGI GIRLS members Skyler Salinas and Jacob Bruce have formed a band on the side and are calling themselves THE SWAMPS.

Head over to their MySpace and check out the song "MISTER COUCH" to get a heaping helping of their slimy, trashy grooves.

broken tree fort ///

According to it's MySpace, BROKEN TREE FORT has been making music for 13 years. It also says they're from Egypt, so who gives a fuck, right?

I can barely read or write anymore and I'm half retarded, so it's time for some sporadic poetry:

RAMSHACKLE BUCKET FUCKER
KING OF THE TURNBUCKLER
NEVER HAD A CHANCE AT ROMANCE
PUNCHED OUT JOEY RAMONE
AND DID A RAIN DANCE

That's what this band sounds like.

Also, Half Japanese.

Fuck you and go listen to them.

devo /// on the colbert report

Devo has been making their rounds on late night shows in support of their first album in twenty years called Something for Everybody. Last night they were on The Colbert Report for an interview and performance of the new single "Fresh". "Fresh" is immediately catchy and embodies a lot of the great classic Devo elements that everyone knows and loves. I normally cringe at the site of old dudes rockin' out. Not in this case! This is absolutely fantastic.

against me! /// interview

INsite Gainesville conducted an interview (page 44) with Tom Gabel from Against Me! to hype up the release of White Crosses. I know, I know. This is a band that hardly anybody with "cred" cares about anymore. And almost everyone in Gainesville has an anecdote about Tom Gabel being a douche. But check out the interview--at least for hilarity's sake. In the the interview, Gabel states that his favorite actor is Ryan Reynolds because he is "so funny".

I guess you can't call Tom Gabel's movie preferences pretentious.

heavy times ///

HEAVY TIMES is a Chicago based group of punk rock n' rollers making melodic tunes with balls.

The band has a more original take on the whole 60's influenced thing that is permeating the underground, taking to the drive of bands like Black Flag, turning off the distortion, and injecting the fervor with Nuggets style sing songs.

These dudes have a release coming out on HOZAC soon (or maybe it's already out?) which I'll definitely be looking into and you should do the same.

Check out their jammms over at their Myspace.

junkers ///

This band sounds like a classic to me.

All of the songs I've heard have that stand out rock n' roll quality to them. The kind where either the guitar, vocals, lyrics, drums, whatever, get stuck in your head. Something jumps out and grabs you.

I like bands who know how to mix their songs in the studio. I personally think the largest problem with the new lo-fi movement is a lack of a good ear (i.e. TIMES NEW VIKING, WAVVES, etc) allowing everything to be mixed essentially at the same level and basically becoming a giant puddle of shit sounds.

JUNKERS know what they're doing. They can write awesome songs and they know how to make them live up to that potential in the studio. David Bowie and Marc Bolan would be proud.

Dig on them.

t-bone and the drones ///

T-BONE AND THE DRONES make goofy ass best friend punk rock n' roll.

The guitars are out of tune. The singing is out of tune. It's all sloppy as fuck and fun to the max.

This is garage rock that sounds like it was actually recorded in a garage.

Peep it.
