norma desmond

Poorly recorded, sloppy, and all over the place. You're gonna like it.

NORMA DESMOND just wants to have some fun.

coffin fly

I am super hard to please when it comes to rockabilly. I grew up on it, I play it, I live it, and there's SO MUCH generic sounding Stray Cats/cartoon crap out there to filter through.

COFFIN FLY immediately caught my attention with the artwork on this EP and upon first hearing "THE BLEND" I was sold.

Taking more from Memphis era Cramps recordings and Gene Vincent than Demented Are Go or any of that shit, these guys know what's up.

MUSIC /// RAYON BEACH - DEATH RIDES A HORSE

TEXAS psych marauders RAYON BEACH have teamed up with FRENCH sleaze peddlers PLASTIC SPOONS RECORDS for their latest release.

The songs on the DEATH RIDES A HORSE 7" are more clearly recorded than their earlier material and they keep with the diverse songwriting that we've all come to love from these guys.

Expect plenty of reverb and acid drenched guitars on this one and grab it from the PLASTIC SPOONS store below.

MUSIC /// SWITCHBLADE CHEETAH

SWITCHBLADE CHEETAH is fucking unpredictable. From 30 second long blasts of sleazy rock n' roll to creepy as shit experiments.

On their album "THE MELLOW SOUNDS OF..." the schizophrenia is what makes the magic happen. It's spastic, weird, homemade, and punk to the core.

You can get the album from WORKER BEE RECORDS over at their BANDCAMP below.

MUSIC /// STRANGE ATTRACTOR - NITE STALKER

STRANGE ATTRACTOR is a completely raw, badass band from Canada that I found on accident.

As far as I know they've only released one album, which is a S/T.

A big recommendation for fans of lo-fi punk rock, DEAD MILKMEN, BLACK FLAG, and obscure 60's flower punk.

After you jam out to "NITE STALKER" you're gonna be hunting this one down.

MUSIC /// SCHOOL KNIGHTS - PROM QUEEN

We recently brought you the riffy math punker "BULLIES" from the duo SCHOOL KNIGHTS and the dudes just dropped a trio of new songs on me from their upcoming EP, "RUSH SK".

The song I've posted below, "PROM QUEEN" kicks off with a mesmerizing little guitar riff that will find itself stuck into your head and keeps with the pop melodies.

Dig on it below and look out for "RUSH SK".

MUSIC /// FLIGHT - TURNS TO BLOOD

Mississippi's own FLIGHT has a new EP coming out on ZOO MUSIC in late September titled "THE LEAD RIDERS".

"TURNS TO BLOOD" is the first track on the record and is a change of sound for the band, leaning more toward post-punk and goth vibes, as opposed to the grimy trash of previous FLIGHT releases.

MUSIC /// SCHOOL KNIGHTS

SCHOOL KNIGHTS just dropped this slab of raucous pop into my inbox. The band is, as far as I can tell, a guitar and drums duo, but I have no clue where they're from.

The track, "BULLIES" abounds with slippery guitar dynamics and plenty of melody. Somewhat in the vein of 90's math rock, but with an injection of stripped down punk rock lo-fi grime.

It's nice to hear musicians playing their instruments, as opposed to masturbating with them.

MUSIC /// PHONECALLS

PHONECALLS hails from VANCOUVER (I'm on a Canada kick, I guess) and they're bringing things back to the days of the riot grrl.

Simple, short punk songs, sans loud distortion or the cock rock dog and pony show, in the vein of bands such as Bikini Kill or early Bratmobile (what the fuck was up with "Girls Get Busy"?)

For anyone looking to relive a day when punk wasn't completely put into a box yet, check these kids out.

MUSIC /// OBITS

Rick Froberg's latest band, Obits, has kind of been ruling my life lately. Drive Like Jehu and Hot Snakes are two of my favorite bands and Obits has quickly joined their ranks.

Raw unpretentious punk with a tinge of 60s surf?

Whats not to like?

(I really dig their obituaries page, look under pictures)

BONUS ROUND:

Here's a great video of Hot Snakes in all of thier hot snaky glory.

osteoferocious ///

This band's name alone makes me want to be all "FUCK YEAH" and stuff, and their music does the same.

Two Indiana dudes making up beat punk in their own way.

Dig on these tunes for the days when you're stuck in the office or inside and you need a summer pick me up.

against me! /// interview

INsite Gainesville conducted an interview (page 44) with Tom Gabel from Against Me! to hype up the release of White Crosses. I know, I know. This is a band that hardly anybody with "cred" cares about anymore. And almost everyone in Gainesville has an anecdote about Tom Gabel being a douche. But check out the interview--at least for hilarity's sake. In the the interview, Gabel states that his favorite actor is Ryan Reynolds because he is "so funny".

I guess you can't call Tom Gabel's movie preferences pretentious.

spray paint ///

Back in 1982, three Canadian brothers got jacked up on candy, listened to a bunch of Black Flag, and started a band using a guitar, some drums, and a boom box.

That band is called SPRAY PAINT and it's a totally amazing glimpse into the life of teenage punk rockers in the Reagan 80's.

Songs range from topics such as gang wars, hating the president, and slam dancing.

Dig on these punk rock fossils and start your own band.

tea elles ///

TEA ELLES is a badass band. I've never seen them live, but their sound is one of twisted psychedelia and trashy punk rock.

I'm way into this new tribe of bands with GUITAR PLAYERS. Bands with guitarists who aren't scared to whip out a riff or a solo or wild ass feedback. TEA ELLES is one such band, making as much racket as they can wring out of their fucked up strangs.

Good shit, brosepheles.

boogie nazis /// don't wake daddy

Despite having one of the worst band names in history, Tuscon's Boogie Nazis are damn cool.

Solid surf rock from some dudes who don't even have a beach to go to. Grab their DON'T TELL DADDY EP for free over at CLLCT.
