grabbag /// look up, look down

GRABBAG is the kind of band I would call an institution. These guys have been kicking around Florida in one form or another for I think at least 10 years and they've always stayed true to their principles, keeping EVERYTHING completely D.I.Y. 

They call their music "shed punk". I can only gather, having grown up in North Florida myself, that this means they practiced or used to practice in a shed. You see, here in Florida, out in the boonies you don't see a lot of garages, so what does that leave you with? Well, you move all your gear out to the hot, shitty shed in the back yard and practice next to the lawn mower and pesticides. If you're a good redneck punk you'll even huff some gas and write a song about it.

That's my experience, anyways.

These FLA shed punks have a new album on it's way out called "LOOK UP, LOOK DOWN". I'm not sure what number this one is, but I gotta say, I've kept up with their releases through the years and this one is the best so far. These guys are totally original and do whatever the fuck they want, regardless of trends.

On this album you'll hear everything from rockabilly to thrash to metal to blistering garage rock solos. 

Anyways, get your ass out to the shed and hope the wireless reaches so you can stream the entire album over at GROOVESHARK.

Douglas Shields and the X-Factors have decided to release their debut album as a FREE DOWNLOAD and you kids know how much we love free shit here at JR. I'm also a big fan of DSXF, as they're some of the nicest, most genuine dudes I've ever met. 

The album is pure punk from beginning to end. Don't get me wrong when I say that, though. I don't mean it sounds like Screeching Weasel or Hot Water Music, cause it's got a little more depth than that shit. Country tinged, simple rompers, almost fringing on rockabilly at times, with mega thought provoking lyrics (tempted to say poetry) that are spit in your face by a singer that sounds like he could be the brooding genius sitting quietly in the back corner of your ENC1101 class who has just had enough and snapped like a fucking high E string and threw your entire universe out of tune.

I've seen a lot of punk bands come in and out of my home town (Gainesville) and these guys are one of the few that have mattered. Get the album.

The Nervous Ticks are keeping it fucking real. I say shit like that a lot, but I really mean it this time. Guitar and drums hillbilly punk rock n' roll from Richmond, VA. Two buds doing it just to do it. They should have some free demos up soon and I'll be sure to post them up here ASAP when I get them. Can't recommend these dudes enough.

When did people stop plugging their guitars into their shitty little amps and turning it up too loud for the amp to handle it? And when did people stop finding drum kits in the dumpster and making badass fucking beats on that shit?

Seriously, I know it's an issue of convenience. It's much easier to plug your MicroKorg direct-in and run it through Garageband. And, I admit, there are /some/ people making interesting music this way, BUT IT'S DRIVING ME FUCKING CRAZY!

I LOVE ROCK N' ROLL MUSIC. I NEED GUITARS. I NEED DRUMS. GIVE ME A BO DIDDLEY BEAT AND A SHITTY SOUNDING E STRING.

Rock N' Roll is an AMERICAN TRADITION, KIDS! Fuck all that Euro, New Wavey sounding shit.
