NEWS /// 9-26-2010

So, I've been MIA for a good bit now and I feel it necessary to explain to you why:

We got two new kittens here at our house. They're cute, we're animal lovers, whatever.

But, one cat in particular is very much HEY I'M IN YOUR STUFF AND I WANT TO BE IN YOUR STUFF AND ON YOUR STUFF AND LET ME TOUCH THAT BECAUSE I NEED TO TOUCH IT OMG I'M GONNA DO THAT NOW.

Got me?

Okay.

What this leads me to is that the said cat ran across my keyboard one night last week and somehow (not completely sure how, actually) deleted Ubuntu from my computer, along with everything I had stored through the operating system.

This means that I have been in a computer funk lately, using my wife's MAC to check e-mails.

Anyways, give me a little time to get a new set up established and I'll be back with more weird ass songs.

MUSIC /// THE TROGGS - FROM HOME

I would almost dare to say that I prefer THE TROGGS over THE KINKS. The guitars are more sinister, the vibe is more sinister, and overall it's more raw.

This track, "FROM HOME" is a fine example of the darker sound of THE TROGGS earlier singles.

Get on it.

Also, on a side note, I apologize for a lack of posts. I've been busy with out of town shows and general life. More music coming this week, though!

REVIEW /// WEEZER - HURLEY

I have been a hardcore WEEZER fan since the age of 12. I spent many a night in high school pining over a girl listening to "Blue", many a night hating a girl listening to "Pinkerton", and many a night not giving a fuck listening to "Green".

Even when "Maladroit" came out, while people were talking shit about it being too "bro-ish", I was digging it. Loud guitars, crunchy power chords, slick ass guitar solos, and catchy songs. It was anthemic rock music, but it was played by nerds who managed to get somewhere by staying nerds.

Rivers Cuomo proudly cites YNGWIE MALMSTEEN as one of his biggest influences. Nerds.

After "Maladroit", however, things got really bad. The music turned into decidely un-rock n' roll slabs of sugary pop bullshit marketed solely for radio play.

What's wrong with being played on the radio? I listen to the radio, I dig music on the radio, so there's nothing wrong with that in my book, but THESE FUCKING SONGS SUCKED.

"Beverly Hills" what the holy fuck? It's catchy and I will sing along to it, but WHAT THE FUCK? How did THAT song come out of such an awesome band like WEEZER?

It left myself and tons of fans in a daze, but it didn't stop with "MAKE BELIEVE".

Then came "RED", which many hoped would be a huge redeeming platter of rock n' roll in the WEEZER fashion. I mean, another untitled "color" themed album? They HAVE to step up for that one.

Not true.

While "RED" was more interesting than "MAKE BELIEVE", as it seemed to be one of the more diverse albums the band had done, it was still a big pile of shit.

Then came "RADITUDE".

The first single for "RADITUDE" is a badass song called "I WANT YOU TO" and gave me hope for this album. But what happened next is nearly unforgivable; AUTOTUNE.

Autotuned vocals in a WEEZER song?

I was done. WEEZER was dead to me. Never again would I venture to hear a new WEEZER song for fear of utter disbelief and disappointment.

Then comes "HURLEY". The stupidest album cover in the history of music. An album that just HAD to suck because the band had seemingly just given up on any attempt at art, but...it doesn't.

"HURLEY" is a solid album. It is not "BLUE" or "PINKERTON", but if I had to compare it to a previous WEEZER album, it is closest to "GREEN".

Strong hooks, crunchy guitars, big on the melody and a little on the raw side, "HURLEY" is a gigantic beam of hope for WEEZER fans.

I'm sorry for this massive rant, but I needed to let you know that it's okay to take a chance on this one. Give it a shot.

Talk shit, but this is a good song.

Reminiscin'.

I DON'T GET IT ///

What the fuck is wrong with famous people?

Why is pop music so obsessed with DAFT PUNK?

When will we see this on the red carpet again?

MUSIC /// JACKIE LOMAX - THE EAGLE LAUGHS AT YOU

JACKIE LOMAX is known for having worked with legendary artists such as ERIC CLAPTON, GEORGE HARRISON, and having released music through APPLE RECORDS.

For you hipster dicks, he's also TERRY RICHARDSONS' step dad.

This track is heavy as a lead bull dick.

MUSIC /// THE TRASHWOMEN - BATTERIES

I apologize for this video being just the album cover, but THIS SONG IS SO GOOD!

VIDEO /// THE VILETONES - DANGER BOY

"NO MORE BEATLES, NO MORE STONES, WE JUST WANT THE VILETONES!"

If you are high, I do not recommend watching this video.

MUSIC /// HUTCH DAVIE - GWENDOLYN AND THE WEREWOLF

Here's a bizarre rocker for you from the guy who wrote the arrangements for classics such as "SLEEPWALK" and "MY BOYFRIENDS BACK".

The piano in this song is SICK.

MUSIC /// THE YO-YOS - MOLE IN THE HOLE

This song is almost too weird to even describe. It has simple instrumentation, but the creepy calliope carnival organ pushes it over the top.

Not much info on this one either. I dig the mystery.

MUSIC /// LEE ROSS - THE MUMMY'S BRACELET

I can't find any info on this track anywhere, so if one of you kids out there knows something, please let me know.

What I can tell you is that this is one creepy, low swung tune about a man who steals the bracelet from a mummy in a museum to give to his beloved wife, only to face the full force of said mummy's revenge.

Serious shit.

If I had to guess I'd say this was recorded around 1958.

MUSIC /// SCHOOL KNIGHTS - PROM QUEEN

We recently brought you the riffy math punker "BULLIES" from the duo SCHOOL KNIGHTS and the dudes just dropped a trio of new songs on me from their upcoming EP, "RUSH SK".

The song I've posted below, "PROM QUEEN" kicks off with a mesmerizing little guitar riff that will find itself stuck into your head and keeps with the pop melodies.

Dig on it below and look out for "RUSH SK".

MUSIC /// WOOZY VIPER - ROCK & ROLL

The mysterious weirdos behind WOOZY VIPER have released another venomous album into the world and it's completely free.

"ROCK & ROLL" is a fitting title for the album, which runs the gamut of rock n' roll sounds, from Stones-y struts to Sun Records echoed out rompers.

Download the album at their website below and shoot them an e-mail to let 'em know you like it. This will be a personal favorite of mine for a good while.

MUSIC /// DEXTER ROMWEBER - ORGAN #2

NORTH CAROLINA'S home spun rockabilly legend DEXTER ROMWEBER serves up a murky organ dirge from 1996's "FOLK SONGS".

It's a change of pace from Dexter's blood curdling, hair raising howl and haunted guitar, but no less bone chilling.

MUSIC /// TERRIBLE FEELINGS

SWEDEN'S own TERRIBLE FEELINGS is making immediate, angsty punk rock and cutting out all of the bullshit.

Bands like THE WIPERS and MURDER CITY DEVILS are first brought to mind with the raw vocals, pounding rhythm section and snakey surf-esque guitar lines winding through.

The band has a tape coming out on SCOTCH TAPES this month and from the sounds of "BLANK HEADS" it's one that I'll be picking up.

MUSIC /// MILK MUSIC

From what I can tell, this band does not exist on the internet. I can't really find any info other than the occasional show listing through another band.

Regardless, I managed to get their demo through ONGAKUBAKA and it's a solid slab of fuzzy, sludged out rock n' roll.

Heavy like dirt and a bit muffled as well, the songs are good once you get past the murk.

Listen to "NERVOUS WRECK" and download the entire demo below.

MUSIC /// AIDS WOLF - TEACHING TO SUFFER

Spazzed out dick and tit flashers AIDS WOLF are preparing to release a new album, "MARCH TO THE SEA" and heading out on a two month tour in support.

Peep a track from the album below.
