VIDEO /// LIL DAGGERS - DADA BROWN

FLORIDA boys LIL DAGGERS recently played a release party for their new "KING CORPSE" 7" on LIVID RECORDS.

This video speaks volumes about the live presence of this band.

Pay close attention to what's going on around the 2:12 mark in the video. Blazin'.

MUSIC /// STRANGE ODD MYSTERIES

PARIS, FRANCE has been confusing the shit out of me lately. As far as I've always been concerned, Paris was just a fancy place to eat croissants and look at expensive shit, but I've never actually been and that's just a crude stereotype from an American redneck.

This cluster of killer punk rock bands that I've been stumbling upon, however, has been giving me the image of a filthy city full of greasy leather clad rock n' rollers. Not to mention the French kids who have added me on FACEBOOK and seem to post nothing but pictures of women giving birth (what the fuck, France?)

STRANGE ODD MYSTERIES happens to be one of these filthy, trashy bands coming out of PARIS, but instead of the blistering fury of bands like CATHOLIC SPRAY, S.O.M. brings out a shade of off kilter pop.

Don't get me wrong, though, it's got teeth.

Dig on the song "TEENAGE POLICY" below from their self released CD-R.

NEWS ///

As you may have noticed, I've been posting a lot of obscure and lost tracks from the 50's and 60's.

You'll continue to see this, mixed in with new music and videos.

There's plenty to be learned from the past and while most bloggers involved in the current "underground" are focused on the NOW, I feel it would be a shame to not attempt to uncover the "nobodies" from times gone past.

Fossils, dudes.

MUSIC /// KIP TYLER - SHE'S MY WITCH

KIP TYLER was a nobody, basically. Recorded a good amount of music, but never went anywhere.

He did, however, create one of the greatest rock n' roll songs of all time.

"SHE'S MY WITCH" has attitude. It has low slung guitar confidence.

This song permeates rebel bravado that is scarcely found in rock n' roll music these days.

Listen to it and let it slink it's way around your brain.

MUSIC /// THE FRANTICS - WEREWOLF

THE FRANTICS were from the Pacific Northwest and originally formed in high school, calling themselves THE FOUR FRANTICS. Two members later went on to form the band MOBY GRAPE.

As far as I can tell, the band didn't produce much music, but "WEREWOLF" alone is enough to cement them as amazing in my mind.

Howling, creepy spoken word, and fucking rock n' roll.

MUSIC /// THE CHANCELLORS - SCREAM

I don't really know anything about THE CHANCELLORS other than this, "SCREAM" is one raw piece of instrumental rock n' roll.

Wet American surf rock with a psychotic, off kilter edge.

"SCREAM" is now available on the amazing BACK FROM THE GRAVE comps.

MUSIC /// THE EAGLES - STALACTITE

First off, this is not the Eagles you're probably thinking of. While I'm one of the rare music bloggers who actually does like /those/ Eagles, these guys are way better.

An obscure 60's Swedish band originally called "LES AILGONS" (the baby eagles), THE EAGLES released this single of JOE MEEK-esque bizarreness, which is still light years beyond anything rock bands are currently doing.

MUSIC /// FLIGHT - TURNS TO BLOOD

Mississippi's own FLIGHT has a new EP coming out on ZOO MUSIC in late September titled "THE LEAD RIDERS".

"TURNS TO BLOOD" is the first track on the record and is a change of sound for the band, leaning more toward post-punk and goth vibes, as opposed to the grimy trash of previous FLIGHT releases.

VIDEO /// CEE LO - FUCK YOU

MUSIC /// CATHOLIC SPRAY

CATHOLIC SPRAY is a fucked up, psycho trash band from PARIS, FRANCE.

The recordings sound like these guys were standing in the middle of the street with a thrift store tape recorder and decided to make an album.

It's that fucking good.

MUSIC /// SCHOOL KNIGHTS

SCHOOL KNIGHTS just dropped this slab of raucous pop into my inbox. The band is, as far as I can tell, a guitar and drums duo, but I have no clue where they're from.

The track, "BULLIES" abounds with slippery guitar dynamics and plenty of melody. Somewhat in the vein of 90's math rock, but with an injection of stripped down punk rock lo-fi grime.

It's nice to hear musicians playing their instruments, as opposed to masturbating with them.

VIDEO /// DEAD MOON ON CHIC-A-GO-GO

MUSIC /// PHONECALLS

PHONECALLS hails from VANCOUVER (I'm on a Canada kick, I guess) and they're bringing things back to the days of the riot grrl.

Simple, short punk songs, sans loud distortion or the cock rock dog and pony show, in the vein of bands such as Bikini Kill or early Bratmobile (what the fuck was up with "Girls Get Busy"?)

For anyone looking to relive a day when punk wasn't completely put into a box yet, check these kids out.

MUSIC /// SOPHIE SWEETLAND

SOPHIE SWEETLAND is a girl from Vancouver doing, seemingly, whatever the fuck she wants.

Nothing says punk to me more than running down the songs on an artist's Myspace page and hearing such diverse genres as noise, surf rock, and minimal electronics.

"BLUE SKIES" was a standout track with it's whirling psychedelic grime and ghostly vocals.

MUSIC /// GOBBLE GOBBLE - ALABASTER BODYWORLDS

GOBBLE GOBBLE'S electro pop masterpiece "NEON GRAVEYARD" is being released into the world via ROYAL FLYING RHINO.

You should get it.

MUSIC /// GREAT DECEIVERS

GREAT DECEIVERS makes moody rock n' roll with simple, yet dense instrumentation. Fans of later Elliott Smith will be pleased.

The ORLANDO, FL based band has just released a new album, "HOUSE OF STAIRS" which is available for free at BANDCAMP.

Listen to "CURSES" below.

MUSIC /// SLANDERCAT

SLANDERCAT has just released his debut EP, "BLOOD OF A BROOM TREE" and it's available for free on BANDCAMP.

Each song is a little different, but they're all in the vein of experimental electronics but with melody and structure, so it doesn't sound like a nerd fell asleep on his Korg.

Peep the opening track below.

MUSIC /// BURNT ONES

BURNT ONES debut album, "BLACK TEETH AND GOLDEN TONGUES" is a fuzzy, dreamy, rock n' roll romp.

Obvious influence by T REX, JESUS AND MARY CHAIN, and doo wop melodies.

The whole album is a great listen from start to finish.

Listen to "BLACK TEETH AND GOLDEN TONGUES" at his BandCamp.

MIX TAPES /// REBELLION #2

POLITICS /// ANGLE FROM EVERY ANGLE

Hot

Hotter

Hottest

IcyHot

Marco Rubio (FL) might be the sexiest 2010 senatorial candidate, but Sharron Angle (NV) certainly is a close second (GILF!!!!). Unfortunately, those on the professional left are digging deep into her past in order to tarnish her image. I ask, "haven't the coffee stains tarnished it enough?" Apparently not. A rumor has surfaced this week about her opposition to black jerseys 20 years ago. Reportedly, Angle and cohorts opposed a local high school football team's switch to black jerseys referring to the color black as 'thoroughly evil'. Angle claimed "no recollection of the controversy or any position she may have taken." I have a sick feeling that her denial of these rumors might adversely effect her electability despite her miles of smiles and strict adherence to constitutional principles.

Take a stand, Angle!
Have some stones!
Admit your opposition to black.
We all know that black is an evil color worn by priests, businessmen, and Metallica.
I yield that you may have gone a little overboard by calling the color black 'thoroughly evil'.

In the future, for your guide to "all things evil", I suggest this:

Evil

SELF PROMOTION FRIDAY /// WAYLON THORNTON - SIXTEEN DREAMS

SELF PROMOTION FRIDAY!!!

I'm working on a new WAYLON THORNTON AND THE HEAVY HANDS album.

Here's a recently recorded song from the album, which will be titled "SIXTEEN DREAMS".

This is the title track:

-WT

MUSIC /// SPEAK AND THE SPELLS

I listened to every song on this band's Myspace at 2am this morning.

It's that good.

Trashy, fervent surf rock n' roll, soaking wet with spring reverb and monster party madness.

SPEAK AND THE SPELLS.

Dig this shit.

-WT

MUSIC /// SPECTRALS

SPECTRALS makes non-chalant, yet immediate pop music with a 60's bounce.

These songs are recorded well with appropriate amounts of dreamy reverb thrown in to make you feel as though Gidget might pop around the corner and blow you a kiss.

Beach music without all of the annoying bullshit unnecessary fuzz that the past years have made so mandatory.

I recommend listening to "LEAVE ME BE" and checking into their CAPTURED TRACKS 7".

-WT

MUSIC /// ORPHEUS KNOXX

ORPHEUS KNOXX brings a refreshing perspective on the current 80's goth revival, opting for natural instrumentation ala post-punk bands such as JOY DIVISION and THE CURE.

"ICE CREAM" displays a lush, yet subtle instrumentation with classically UK female vocals.

Sweet like C86 twee, but wrapped in a button down cardigan black as pitch.

-WT

MUSIC /// SEALINGS

With an atmosphere all dark, dreary, and throbbing, SEALINGS provide the soundtrack for a late night ex-lover revenge session.

Layers of distorted vocals, mud glazed guitars, and keyboard thumps.

"AWESOME GHOST" is a grimy stand out track.

MUSIC /// ARCADE FIRE - THE SUBURBS

Not that they need the press but, "THE SUBURBS" is blowing me away. I was not looking forward to this release at all...at all. I was heat lamp on "NEON BIBLE", but it looks like they turned away from fast food to gourmet. Check your mainstream prejudice please and give these guys some credit. I mean, in the 15 minute band era can we please have major respectable bands?

"So can you understand?

Why I want a daughter while I'm still young
I wanna hold her hand
And show her some beauty
Before this damage is done

But if it's too much to ask, it's too much to ask
Then send me a son "

Wow, I am getting old.

-jw

MUSIC /// SPIRIT TRAMP - DREAM SALUTE

SPIRIT TRAMP is JT Bringardner, the dayglo shaman behind OH FORTUNA and one half of sunshine dream drippers RABBIT PUNCH.

"DREAM SALUTE" is a beautifully simple acoustic drifter, sounding like Elliott Smith made it to Heaven and is hanging out under a phosphorescent lemon tree strumming for eternity.

Keep an eye out for more SPIRIT TRAMP, as it's bound to be making the rounds.

-WT

MUSIC /// RABBIT PUNCH - MUNCHIE DREADLOCK

Gainesville's own glo-fi, hyper colored Bugle Boys, RABBIT PUNCH have unveiled a new end of the summer pulser.

"MUNCHIE DREADLOCK" throbs like a neon head wound with a Slap Bracelet compress.

Peep it below and head over to their MySpace for more hippy dippy crispy F-L-A electro thump.

MUSIC /// PSYCHIC LUNCH RECORDS

PSYCHIC LUNCH RECORDS is a force to keep an eye on.

A collaboration between two Texas based music junkies, STEPH LOPEZ and SKYLER SALINAS and Brooklyn based art duo CMRTYZ, this label is already on a roll.

Here's the first 3 releases they have lined up. Impressive is a word that comes to mind:

FUNGI GIRLS / INDIAN WARS SPLIT 7" (on white vinyl)

DEAD GHOSTS LIVE LP (on clear vinyl)

THE BEETS / CASSIE RAMONE SPLIT 7" (on clear blue vinyl)

Each record comes in a silk screened, hand numbered sleeve.

Pre-order your copies at the PSYCHIC LUNCH website below.

NEWS /// CONAN O'BRIEN - AND THEY CALL ME MAD?

"Third Man Records presents a new release from the one and only Conan O’Brien. Recorded in Nashville at the Third Man studios this past June, the vinyl 7” is available now for pre-order in the Third Man Records online shop. “And They Call Me Mad?” is Conan’s hilarious improvised take on the Frankenstein legend. The B side of the single is an interview with Conan conducted by friend Jack White."

Oh. Shit.

You can preview 15 seconds or so of the A side over at the THIRD MAN website.

-WT

NEWS /// NOBUNNY - FIRST BLOOD

This shit is dropping on 9/21/2010 on GONER and I am FUCKING STOKED.

NOBUNNY is rock n' roll in all of it's dumbass glory.

This will be his 3rd album, I believe, following up the epically awesome "LOVE VISIONS".

Also, NOBUNNY has a live LP available through JACK WHITE'S (!!!) own THIRD MAN RECORDS.

Rise of the Nobunz.

MUSIC /// C V L T S - L V S T

CVLTS recently released their debut album LVST on Prague's own AMDISCS and it's a real solid creeper.

Slow moving, warped beeps and bumps give this album the vibe of a Robitussin Slurpee going through a straw that's just a little too small.

The "B" side, "LUCK SURF" is a 9 minute long epic of sluggish, sparkling mud, good for putting on for a midnight painting session or a time for reflecting the regrets you have of your career choice as a serial killer.

Either way, you can download the whole thing for free at AMDISCS website and I recommend doing so.

-WT

MUSIC /// SEAN MOORE - ASHLEY

SEAN MOORE has been mentioned on this blog before, but not under his birth name. Sean is a member of South Florida based dream pop crew VIERNES.

Sean was nice enough to drop this solo track into our box and I'm digging it.

Tinges of Elephant Six song writing with swells of beautifully arranged music swirling behind Sean's McCartney-esque croon.

MUSIC /// MICKEY LEE LANE

Maybe this counts as a video post, but not really.

MUSIC /// PARIAH CAREY

Do you need music to sit in an abandoned crack house and cry to?

Did the shadow man come to you in your sleep last night and pin you to your bed and whisper ancient secrets about Heaven and Hell to you in Aramaic?

Can you turn your head completely around like an owl and sometimes fuck yourself with a crucifix?

If you answered yes to any of these, you need to hear PARIAH CAREY.

Electronic music generally isn't my thing, but PARIAH CAREY (aka Jheri) has turned it into a ritualistic slaughter house of minimal creaks and groans.

It makes me feel like I need to open my Bible before I go to bed.

Give this a listen, but keep looking behind you to make sure Cerberus isn't about to fuck your shit up.

MUSIC /// OBITS

Rick Froberg's latest band, Obits, has kind of been ruling my life lately. Drive Like Jehu and Hot Snakes are two of my favorite bands and Obits has quickly joined their ranks.

Raw unpretentious punk with a tinge of 60s surf?

Whats not to like?

(I really dig their obituaries page, look under pictures)

BONUS ROUND:

Here's a great video of Hot Snakes in all of thier hot snaky glory.

MUSIC /// VIERNES

There is a genre that seems rather popular at the moment, greg and I call it 'two dudes fucking around.' i guess it is best identified when you go to a show and find what looks like a 70's sci-fi movie on stage (no recognizable musical instruments). Subsequently, two dudes will make noise from said movie set. This noise ranges from the ethereal to the obnoxious (think the sounds of a rusty, dilapidated asshole factory).

At first glance, Viernes appears to be one of these bands, but alas, they are so much more. They make moving, atmospheric pieces with actual melody and harmony and... holy shit, is that coherent song structure?!

They just released their debut lp, sinister devices on kanine records and it is fantastic. Don't miss a chance to see them live, if they come your way.

-jw

MUSIC /// THE HUMMS - LEMONLAND

I really cannot put into words how much I like this album.

It's diverse, it's raucous, it's weird, it's catchy, it's well recorded, it's fucking fantastic.

THE HUMMS are an Athens, GA outfit spearheaded by wild haired country boy Zeke Sayer. Zeke runs his own recording studio in a former theme park, making it a ghost town of sorts and you can hear that haunted Scooby Doo sound coming through on this album.

The opener "BLOODSUCKING VAMPIRE" sets the tone for the record with it's frantic "something is chasing me and it's fun" vocals and warbly eerie guitar lines.

Every song on this slab is a winner. And it's got 18 songs.

Grab yerself a copy of the LP below.

-WT

MUSIC /// ACE BUSHY STRIPTEASE

I have seen the future.

This group of presumably ADD-addled visionaries craft songs that can evoke everything from Guided By Voices to post-rock via a dollop of Midwestern emo, something that is pretty surprising considering where they hail from: Birmingham.

This city, situated in the West Midlands of England, is more famous for being the home of Black Sabbath (and, um, Duran Duran) than for being a hotbed of boundary-pushing indie-pop, but in recent years popular beat-combos such as Johnny Foreigner have been dragging the place out of the primordial ooze.

Good for them, because I don't think anyone could tolerate another The Twang.

k
xo

MUSIC /// NEW SCIENCE PROJECTS

NEW SCIENCE PROJECTS is a grizzly dude from Texas making raw as fuck acoustic rock n' roll, usually just backed by drums or simple percussion.

The songs are solid and this cats voice makes everything sound like it might be the end of the world.

Check it.

MUSIC /// NEW WEEZER

So, WEEZER has announced that their debut album on EPITAPH will be called "Hurley" and the cover image is a picture of...well, Hurley from the TV show LOST.

Retarded? Yes.

But, give this first song a listen. For me, it says that Weezer /may/ be back writing at least "Green" level material, which is good.

Everyone hated "Green" when it came out, but then "Maladroit" came out and everyone was like, "Oh, green wasn't so bad in comparison." But then all these other shit piles came out and like just about everyone else; I gave up.

Anyways, get your ears turned on and listen to "MEMORIES" below.
