Awesome song/video by 80s German footnotes, Trio, popularized by this VW commercial

which seems pertinent during moving season in Gainesville.

MUSIC /// Cobwebbs

Hailing from Brisbane (Australia's third-most populous city, fact fans!), Cobwebbs, despite their oh-so-hip repeated-letter name (see; Wavves, Nodzzz, anyone from the West Coast with a Macbook and a trust fund) sound like they would be more at home on a copy of Nuggets left to warp in Hell than sipping Corona Light by the pool.

"Chase You Around" is the dirtiest, most primal tune to come out of Oz since, in my humble opinion, The Birthday Party. What could be higher praise than that?

PETAL SHOP has the perfect easy going bluegrass influenced sound for a summer drive to the springs or a nice lake spot.

These guys would sound right at home on a Plan-It-X tour.

This band has "NEXT BIG THING" written all over it.

For fans of Surfer Blood, Vamp Weekend, etc.

Good shit.

MUSIC /// The Eichmann Family

For my second post on the music scene in ZAGREB, CROATIA, I'm writing about the trash rock trio, THE EICHMANN FAMILY.

These dudes are running the gamut from raging punkers to psychotic surfy twang.

The band shares a guitarist with WELCOMIN' COMMITTEE IN FLAMES, who I've previously blogged about and their bass player plays stand up, dog house bass, which is impressive as it's being used in trashy rock n' roll, as opposed to cheesy ass "psychobilly".

Head over to their MySpace and give these dudes a listen.

-WT

MUSIC /// The Notes

Do you miss squeaky, soft C86 twee pop?

Do you wear cardigans and have a pixie bob haircut?

If you can answer yes to either of those questions, then you'll probably really like The Notes.

To be fair, I answered "No." to both of those questions and I like them.

Soft, sweet vocals, accompanied by reverbed guitars, drums.

Give them a listen and if you dig it, drop them a line.

-WT

MUSIC /// The Band In Heaven

THE BAND IN HEAVEN hail from Orlando, FL, which is the home of Mickey Mouse and a lot of scuzzy, awesome punk rock bands.

These guys, however, are taking a different approach than their regional theme by making some mega ethereal, fuzzy, spaced out pop.

Dream pop is the appropriate genre title, I guess, so for you genre fiends, there you go.

I imagine this is the kind of music that the creatures who live inside the caves deep in the Florida water table listen to.

Make up your own mind at their Bandcamp page.

MUSIC /// The Evil Hoodoo

Got a bottle and my significant other is at band practice, what else am I to do?

Another post ye say? Well don't twist my arm or anything.

THE EVIL HOODOO

Weird garagey/noisy lo-fi mess from Japan. Go figure. On Mangrove Records (a Japanese label) and apparently distributed in the Ol' Usa by the purveyors of the noisy and the lo-fi, K Records. Again, go figure. This is the kind of music you wish you listened to in high school so that you could REALLY annoy your parents.

Check it out.

MUSIC /// Shape Shifter

YARCH!!! This is my first post here on JR!

My name is Dan, what is yours? Do you like me, I like you?

SHAPE SHIFTER

On Don Giovani records. Not sure if they're around anymore but I really love their 7". Super tight songs with catchy riffs peppered throughout. Makes me want to jump off of my futon and thrash. What more do you want from a hardcore band?

You can listen to the 7" on their myspace page.

NEWS /// New writers, content, etc

Here shortly you'll notice some new writers throwing up their opinions and expertise on our beloved Jurngle Rart.

New content coming such as writers devoted to LITERATURE, TECHNOLOGY, and even a dude devoted to posting random internet bullshit.

You're asking yourself, "Isn't this entire blog just random internet bullshit?"

Well you're partly right, but think of this guy as that person you know who sits on his computer all night eating Hamburger Helper and watching YouTube videos of shitty rap songs until noodles come out of his nose.

Sounds good, right?

We also have a new guy coming in to post on some of the best new bands in the underground because, well, I can't cover everything.

Basically, we're expanding the family. If you're interesting in writing and have something you feel that you can contribute, hit me up:

THEJUNGLEROT@GMAIL.COM

Until then, keep your eyes out for new posts, bitches and stay out of the tall grass.

MUSIC /// Teenage Reverb

This band comes across as a little bit over indulgent or hipster-y at times, but this album is a good listen from start to finish. Not bad as far as "chillwave" goes.

The track "Damp For A Good While" is a bit of a cluster-fuck, so make up your mind on that one.

-WT

MUSIC /// Aged Yummy

AGED YUMMY plays the kind of math rock that makes your head twist into a knot, but at the same time it's melodic. Make sense?

I haven't heard decent math rock in a while, so these guys are refreshing.

MUSIC /// Son Of Rams

SON OF RAMS is a side project of FAMILY TREES bassist Joe Pruitt.

While FAMILY TREES is a more mellow pop project, SON OF RAMS takes a more psychedelic 60's approach to things, at times reminding me of APPLES IN STEREO.

The songs are great and you can download a full album at the band's website.

MUSIC /// Welcomin' Committee In Flames

The only conclusion I can currently reach about Zagreb, Croatia is that the music scene is FUCKING BALLIN' AS SHIT and you'll probably see me posting a lot of Croatian bands in the next few days because, well, there's a lot of them and people need to hear this stuff.

The first band that has really caught my eye/ears is WELCOMIN' COMMITTEE IN FLAMES.

WCIF, as they call themselves for short, is composed of a guitarist, a drummer, and a singer. The guitarist and drummer are both very involved in the Zagreb music scene while the lead singer is this crazy lady from Japan who shouts shit about her tits.

The band first caught my eye through a photo set on the kick ass Croatian based blog, TEENAGE LOBOTOMY.

In the photo set you see the band rolling all over the floor, trading the microphone, beating two drums to shit, and weirding the shit out of the audience. My first thought? FUCK YES.

The music itself is slippery give-no-fuck rock n' roll stripped to it's barest of bones.  I could see the band easily drawing comparison to American legends The Gories, to give you a better idea.

I would love to see these cats live. Anyone want to book a flight to Croatia?

MUSIC /// Bazile

Bazile is an Austin-based musical project that--as his website says--"could be considered the second cousin of Sufjan Stevens and Radiohead". He recently released a debut album entitled The Soujorn of Professor Narducci.

In fact, you can stream the album here.

In case the album title wasn't enough of a clue, I am here to tell you that this album is a concept album. But do not worry if you're an anti-concept album kind of person. The "concept" part of the album doesn't spoil by being obnoxiously omnipresent like some concept albums.

Bazile takes the listener on sabbatical with Italian Professor Narducci as he lusts after wisdom and woman (how Italian!). The journey has an eclectic and worldly feel to it. My personal favorite part of the journey was "Modern World". It reveals all of Bazile's capabilities in one cohesive song. At twelve song, the album is a bit long for a debut album, but enjoyable from beginning to end.

Academia misses you, Narducci!

Do you like THE WIPERS a whole lot?

Do you wish more bands had the same balls and vibe as said band?

MUSIC /// Ghost Coast

GHOST COAST is further proof that Texas is steady turning out awesome music.

Wonky, wobbly, country rock n' roll through a lo-fi medium with a Roky Erickson vibe weaving in and out.

The dude only has 3 songs up on his MySpace page, but I'm hoping to hear more soon.

I dare you to check it out.

Robot Unicorn Attack /// Not A Band Name

This game, ROBOT UNICORN ATTACK, could possibly be the greatest casual game of all time, but only because of the soundtrack. a war is coming? ///

I've been quiet for a little while over here.

Did some vacation, did some thinking.

Is underground music being co-opted? Maybe this is an obvious question, but I feel it bears repeating.

First with PITCHFORK bringing payola and corporate motivation into the atmosphere and now with their tentacles reaching into the grass roots blog-verse with ALTERED ZONES, it just feels to me like a gross attempt at monopolizing (read: capitalizing on) DIY artists.

I may be ultra bored by 90% of the witch haus/chillwave/glo-fi/etc artists, but they're doing their thing and being as weird as they want to be, spreading the love and making "music" for the sake of doing so.

Now with ALTERED ZONES seemingly aimed at riding the chillwave, will this become the next GRUNGE?

Will witch haus fashions be the next thing to hit Old Navy?

Am I fucking crazy and paranoid?

Maybe I'm not making sense. To get things to basics, I'm worried that bloggers will give up looking for new music and digging and sharing.

Do not get complacent, writers.

Keep looking for fossils, dudes.

true story ///

When I was in 6th grade, I asked my parents to buy me the Green Day Album "Dookie." I woke up on my birthday to find no cd. I asked why had my parents forsaken me. My mom explained that they were going to buy it at wal-mart, but changed their minds when some clerk told them that "there is a song about masterbation on the cd." Because of that moment, I never listened to a Green Day album.

That clerk saved my life.

a lifestyle by choice ///

I stumbled on this by accident. itunes thinks that this should be the album cover for tenacious d. tell me you can look at this picture and not want to hear what this d guy has to say. i dare you. after listening to some tracks, i am pretty sure that this is parody. the problem is that sometimes there is a thin line between parody and the source material. (i am not saying that all hip hop/ rap is fucking ridculous but google 'rap album cover' and watch your night disappear)

which brings us to this...

their bio claims "Having played at various skate parks, house parties, tattoo shops, dive bars, or anywhere else they could...Sober Daze stays true to their name and to the spirit of punk rock on this album. With songs about drinking and punk rock politics, all punk bases are covered."

wait, is this a punk band? it is still not clear enough.

track list includes 'livin' it up,' '100 beers,' 'broken bottles,' and 'shit faced.' parody or science fact? you tell me.

oh and ska called, they want their font back.

Saw these guys for the first time last night and was blown away. The lead singer got completely bare ass naked and stayed that way for the entire set. This would have been funny/awesome for any band to do, but these guys actually had kick ass songs to back up the live show.

PITCHFORK launches ALTERED ZONES today, which if you haven't heard, is their monopolizing of the blogosphere.

Can't hate on it too much because some of our buds will be contributing, but I do have some fear that it will be, as one tweeter put it, "like when Wal-Mart come to town."

I guess we'll find out over the next few weeks. But, do not worry about us, readers! We cover shit that isn't too cool, so I don't think we have much to worry about.

emotioncore ain't dead /// part I

Despite coming from the almost infuriatingly celebrated Ridgewood, New Jersey "shitgaze drone-pop" scene, the sound of Power Naps is not the sound of confused twenty-somethings whimpering over a single power chord so doused in reverb that it sounds like a kitten fart! Stranger things have happened, but it is nice to stumble onto a band who are still in thrall to early/mid 90s midwestern "emo".

A similar prospect are Scotland's very own post-teen heart-throbs Boygirlanimalcolour (yes, yanks, coloUr). Drawing their cues from Cap'n Jazz, American Football and quite possibly any project related to the Kinsella brothers ever, they make being involved in the current Scottish music scene a little bit less embarassing. Hey dudes, if Tear Jerks ever write more than three songs we should totally do a show!!

Stayed tuned for part II of emotioncore ain't dead coming soon (I'm still alive!)
