i'm on my period ///

I come here to rant sometimes. It's my safe place. My soap box or whatever. Some fucking shit like that.

I'm tired of apathetic hipster doofus kids. I don't understand it, honestly. I'm not just picking on people for once, you know? Not just making fun of your fucking losers. I sincerely don't understand the motivation behind the new...emotional trend, I guess it is, which consists of blank stares, hands in pockets, and a lack of social interaction.

Some say it's just awkwardness, but that is a sincere vibe. This vibe of "I'M WAY TOO FUCKING COOL TO TALK/FEEL/EMOTE" makes me want to punch these kids right in their scrawny little arms.

It's NOT COOL. If some of these people pro-create, then we will end up with an entire generation of children that sincerely do not know how to feel, all because their parents thought it would be "totally moist" if they just faked like nothing mattered.

So, in a nutshell:

Take a break from listening to your droopy eyed girlfriend's droney slobbery "shitgaze" band and learn how to be a human again, you pasty fucking globs of irony.

P.S. I'm really sorry if this comes off as "self righteous" or like I'm on a high horse or something.

Uh-oh! Don't make the kitty angry.

I've decided this thing is simultaneously hilarious and retarded--like Trig Palin--and I had to chime in on the feline fellatio. I've reposted a couple of fun comments from the interwebs that aptly describe this tool. Enjoy:

By: Da_Doctor

"My pal Papa Mali has been touring with one of these for at least a couple of years, now. It's wicked awesome, particularly if you wanna travel with just one or two guitars and a backpack. (His second guitar is a Dobro.)"

By: grandpa shits alot

"dude holy fuck

By: drsnacks

"Guess y'all didn't get the memo. Autotune is on the way out."

By: Anonymous Coward

"Wow, this solves so many of the problems that have plagued us from truly freeing ourselves expressively ...

oh, wait. Yeah. No, this thing is beyond stupid. And it looks stupid. And it has a stupid World of Warcraft name."

I never realized there were so many doctors making comments on stupid online forums.

Conspiracy Theory 1 /// Pandora

I understand that the whole idea of pandora is there are no asshole dj's, tastemakers, or pay per play deals to interfere with the music selection. The song selection is supposed to be random as all hell, right?

So, I select the "alternative/ indie rock" station from time to time. Once, I heard 4 Arctic Monkey songs within an hour. More recently, it played 5 death cab songs within an hour and 1/2. It seems to me that groups of songs at any given time period seems to go together. (sometimes you hear a lot of 90's, a lot of electro, etc.)

My conspiracy theory is that pandora either uses dj's, or more likely dj databases. That is to say, for a time period they will pull songs from collection A, then switch to collection B and so forth. All i know is that some where in there, some one has a huge hard-on for Arctic Monkeys.

StreightAngular /// After and Before

StreightAngular proudly hails from Bostonville, Alaska. I assume this is located somewhere between Fenway Park and ANWR...? You should definitely check these guys out if you like the idea of a Nada Surf sounding band with a motley song writing approach a la Wowee Zowee.

They have a newish album called After and Before. You can get a digital copy via iTunes. My favorite tracks are as follows:

"Are You Ever Satisfied?" -- Well executed call-and-response verse. It is beautifully deplete of emotion and connotes a lack of satisfaction. The verse leads into a Talking Headsesque chorus. And I like that A LOT. You'd swear they got David Byrne to chime in.

"Girl with a Tambourine" -- Cute, catchy, and poppy. This song highlights the complementary nature of the male and female vocal parts. It's kind of hard to get the chorus out of your head after a few listens.

Check them out at myspace and then order a physical copy of the LP.

Music Therapy is Bullshit /// Anyone Can Play Guitar

Ok, perhaps I am being harsh. The music therapy scientists have done a great job proving that people feel/ get better when they get to hear tunes that they love. No shit. But the american music therapy association thinks that you need to get certified and study at an approved music therapy program in order to accomplish this task.

I can be a fan of official-ness at times, this is a situation of creating false barriers to rocking someone's socks off. If you know a friend or relative who is sick, go play their favorite songs. Book shows in hospitals. If grandpa used to drum during the swing era, go to his bed side and bang a snare in his face. No license to rock required.

The first thing that comes to mind with these guys is the phrase: "REAL FUCKING DEAL" because they totally are. It would appear that don't give a shit about a record label, about being cool, or about what a bunch of scrawny swoopy haired buttnuts think of them.

The music at first reminds me of Satan's Youth Ministers, which is a really good thing. Heavily Alice Cooper influenced goofball stoner punk rock. It's good shit made by real guys. I don't know, just check the shit out.

Broken Social Scene /// Harvest of Hope

I know it's a bit late for this, but I wanted to write up a little video review of the Broken Social Scene show that I attended last weekend. For the sake of full disclosure, BSS is my favorite active band. They could fart into mics and I would find it brilliant.

A little back-story: the show was very close to cancellation. Drew, Canning & crew arrived one hour before their scheduled start time. Considering this fact, the show went supremely well. There were only a few technical difficulties. Namely, the sound folks had a difficult time getting Lisa Lobsinger's vocal levels right. At one point, Canning had some guitar difficulties and the techs had to come out on stage between songs. This was a bit serendipitous as it opened the door for Kevin Drew to play a snippet of New Order's "Temptation". I wish I could find video for it.

Kevin Drew kept apologizing profusely throughout the performance for the troubles. There really was no need for apologies. The set was killer. The instrumentation mix was fantastic. BSS were playing with a somewhat scaled back group which allowed for a lot of space in the mix. I particularly appreciated the spacious mix (being outdoors probably helped that). The song selections of the evening provided a healthy amount of new and old stuff. I recognized a couple new songs: "Texaco Bitches" and "World Sick". They are both off the upcoming album, Forgiveness Rock Record. Here's some video of the "World Sick" performance:

The set included a lot of crowd pleasers. Seemed like they leaned a little more towards tunes off the self-titled album. Here's a video of "7/4 Shoreline"(Caution: this video might cause motion sickness. Additional caution: some schmuck attempts harmonies with the band during the chorus):

The BSS crew whipped the ass of "Fire Eye'd Boy". The video and sound quality is very solid in this video. The filmer has a very steady hand. Certainly will reorient your inner ear after that last video:

By far, the highlight of the evening was the performance of "It's All Gonna Break". If you have ever witnessed this song live and weren't completely moved, then you are soulless. Sorry guy. Sorry girl. This has always been a favorite of mine and now it's even favoriter. The rendition included instrumentational aid and performance aid by Mucca Pazza. Mucca Pazza brought a lot to the song during the classic BSS swells and by adding to the overall imagery of "it all breaking". Without further ado, here is the video:

Sigh...what a great show it was. Moral of the story: go see BSS when they come to your town for the Forgiveness Rock Record tour.

Douglas Shields and the X-Factors have decided to release their debut album as a FREE DOWNLOAD and you kids know how much we love free shit here at JR. I'm also a big fan of DSXF, as they're some of the nicest, most genuine dudes I've ever met.

The album is pure punk from beginning to end. Don't get me wrong when I say that, though. I don't mean it sounds like Screeching Weasel or Hot Water Music, cause it's got a little more depth than that shit. Country tinged, simple rompers, almost fringing on rockabilly at times, with mega thought provoking lyrics (tempted to say poetry) that are spit in your face by a singer that sounds like he could be the brooding genius sitting quietly in the back corner of your ENC1101 class who has just had enough and snapped like a fucking high E string and threw your entire universe out of tune.

I've seen a lot of punk bands come in and out of my home town (Gainesville) and these guys are one of the few that have mattered. Get the album.

blogger is a fucking joke ///

So, apparently Google/Blogger have a new initiative of DELETING HUNDREDS OF MUSIC BLOGS A MONTH. The very worst part of this is that they aren't giving any real information to the bloggers who are being nixed.

Any blogger who is reported for posting music without permission is just sent a perplexing e-mail stating that a violation has occured and not to let it happen again, but the file in question is not named, therefore leaving many bloggers scratching their heads, only to get their blog archives completely whiped out when the un named file isn't removed.

What the fuck Google/Blogger? Even bloggers who are posting files WITH PERMISSION are being attacked by this shit, but given no explanation or real information.

This shit is MAJOR fucked up and would not be a problem if these "warnings" were more elaborate and gave the bloggers a real opportunity to fix the issue.
